Buddhism, the Tripitaka and the three baskets

Year 3 Jemison have learned this week that the Buddhists scriptures are known as the Tripitaka which means ‘three baskets’ This is because the original writing were wrote on palm leaves and stored in baskets. Today the children wrote their own scriptures following the ways of the Buddha and added them to our baskets.

Why are some words special? Buddhism.

We discussed the Tripitaka and why this is such an important text for Buddhists. We learnt this means ‘three baskets’ as this is how the original Tripitaka was stored. We then listened to a story from ‘The Way of the Buddha: Jakata Tales’. We created a story board to show the main events and then discussed the moral of the story: ‘Smart thinking is required at all times’.

Why are some words special? Islam.

We discussed the Qur’an and why this is a special book for Muslims. We then listened to the stories ‘The Prophet and the Ants’ and ‘The Crying Camel’. We discussed the key messages from these stories and then acted the stories out. We asked our peers to guess which story we were acting and out and encouraged them to explain how they knew.

The Quran

We know that Muslims have a special book called The Quran. Mrs Kamrun answered all the questions we had about this special book and her faith.

Why are these words special?

We revisited the parable of the soil before learning and quizzing each other about the Torah scroll, its importance to Judaism and why it is treated in an important and respectful way.

Why are some words special?

We learnt about the Christian religion, discussing the Bible and the Old and New Testaments. We then listened to the story of The Good Samaritan. We talked about the key messages of kindness and helpfulness before sequencing the main events from the story.

The Bible

We know Christians have a special book called The Bible! Noah’s Ark is one story from that book.

Noah’s Ark retell

Year 3 Jemison have retold the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark with their partner and discussed what Christians might learn from it. Some children even present their storyboard to the class!

Community Cohesion – Christianity

We have been researching our local Christian church, St John the Baptist. We used the church website to find out what events are offered to the local community.
We know that Christians want to help people in their local area as this means they are following the teachings of Jesus.
