Curriculum Rationale

At Birkwood Primary School, we value and are dedicated to the teaching of Art; we see this as a fundamental part of school life. We are committed to providing an ‘Arts Rich Curriculum’ for our children. We believe that by developing this, we can contribute to the quality of our children’s lives, both within and beyond school. We see Art as a means to support learning in a range of ways. The skills that are developed in these subjects can be transferred across the curriculum and thus aid learning.

As a school, and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

At Birkwood we listen to the views of our children. Pupil voice is a valuable assessment tool. The children will discuss and evaluate what they have learned and are always keen to offer ideas. Staff will implement these ideas into their teaching when at all possible.

Class teachers are responsible for the teaching of Art, although there will be times when professional artists will be in school. We take every opportunity to develop links with outside agencies and experts to enrich our Art provision.

Our Design and Technology will be enhanced by tailored support and guidance from Hepp DT who, through use of prepared material resources, will provide high quality and engaging Design and Technology workshops.

We will work with Hepp DT to create learning experiences that are engaging, memorable but more importantly, to raise the profile of Design and Technology within our primary curriculum. This will ensure that primary Design and Technology at Birkwood Primary School develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials.

Our curriculum is rich in technical, creative and aspirational vocabulary and allows all learners to engage and contribute positively, whilst developing their linguistic skills. Language development is at the heart of our Art curriculum.
