Pupil Voice
At Birkwood Primary School, we invest in the building of character and resilience, through many ways, but one of these being our Pupil Voice structures. As leaders of the school, we believe that the most important form of data collection is speaking to children, and we use this to inform academic and pastoral strategy. Children at Birkwood are encouraged to develop the necessary skills to enable them to take responsibility for our school and contribute positively to the wider community.
This includes:
School Council
Play Leaders
House Captains
Subject Ambassadors
School Council
The purpose of the School Council is to develop the personal development priorities across school. The School Council is voted through class elections, and children speak to the rest of the class about why they think they are a good candidate. They represent the views of their fellow pupils and act as role models for our School Values in their leadership capacity.
Play Leaders
The development of play is a huge part of a child’s school day, and so we believe that it is important to ensure pupil voice is present with any decision we take around play and lunch times. Play leaders have given presentations in assemblies modelling respectful and inclusive play.
House Captains
Help promote the school Behaviour Policy as model pupils. They collate all house points in school every week and announce the individual and house winners who have the most points. The captains meet regularly, to plan and host events, to celebrate the pupils with the most points culminating in an end of year party for the winning house.
Subject Ambassadors
Subject Ambassadors are pupils who hold a leadership role to promote and support a particular subject area at Birkwood. They help to encourage enthusiasm and engagement among our community, and sometimes assist teachers in a range of tasks related to their subject.
