Personal Development is at the heart of everything we do at Birkwood. Linked firmly to our school vision statement of \u2018Do The Right Thing,\u2019 we aim to assist in the development of truly inclusive citizens who are a credit to their family, their community and, crucially, to themselves.<\/div>\n

A central focus at Birkwood\u00a0throughout the curriculum is the Equalities Act 2010. We believe that this fundamental and core knowledge is something every child should understand (at an age-appropriate level) to be successful in our global community.<\/div>\n

By the time pupils leave us in Year 6, they\u00a0have learned the full range of protected characteristics, discussed these and applied their knowledge to real life scenarios, including contemplating hurdles and challenges they may have faced or could face in the future.<\/div>\n

We aim to develop character through offering rich, early childhood experiences which develop a range of virtues. Opportunities for development are provided: memorable interaction, experiences through practical everyday school situations as well as an enrichment offer that is inclusive and broad. At Birkwood Primary School, we understand the value of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PHSE) which\u00a0includes our commitment to Relationship and Sex Education (RSE). Our intention is to provide a range of learning opportunities which help\u00a0prepare children for a successful life.\u00a0Our Curriculum allows children to understand how they develop personally and socially and addresses any issues or questions that may arise during their formative years. We aim to encourage our children to begin to understand and secure a sense of self-worth and to lay a foundation of skills that will last a lifetime.\u00a0Our curriculum does this by encouraging children to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who\u00a0contribute positively to school and the wider community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Birkwood Primary School we aim to deliver\u00a0a curriculum that is accessible to children of all ages and academic ability with the hopes of maximising knowledge and understanding.\u00a0The PSHE and RSE curriculum are designed so that all our children have the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to be happy, healthy,\u00a0and safe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through teaching PSHE under the new government guidelines and <\/span>1decision<\/span><\/b>, we aim to provide an inclusive curriculum which will reflect our children\u2019s increasing independence and physical and social awareness. It builds on the skills that pupils acquire during EYFS to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility,\u00a0and manage personal and social safety, including online. PSHE shows Upper Key Stage 2 children how to cope with the body and mind changes of puberty and will cement skills learned to become a proactive member of 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u202fcentury society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
