A Journey into the Land of Literature

Year 4 enjoyed quiet time on the Reading Bus this morning. There’s nothing like half an hour with a good book to start a productive day!

If I were Prime Minister

On GE17 Day, we encouraged each other to share priorities, concerns and worries linked to ourselves, our families, our country and our world. We worked in small production teams to create short films that captured our heartfelt opinions.

One Love at Birkwood

It is so important to create opportunities for difficult discussion topics. Our focus today was positivity, bravery, kindness, determination and selflessness. The children asked questions, commented, shared and recorded notes as part of a variety of tasks. Everyone agreed that the concert in Manchester had a positive impact on a desperate situation. Remember – love not hate!

Big write task: To write a nature poem in the style of Christina Rossetti.  These children received a headteacher award sticker and personalised feedback from Mrs Allen, acknowledging their skill and imagination. Really well done to each poet.

At One With Nature

Year 4 spent time taking photographs to represent nature in our school grounds. They were challenged to select just 10 of their favourite photos and use crop, zoom and effect features. The children worked independently to add text and music to create an iMovie. The quality of the final movies was very impressive!

After sharing J.K. Rowling’ s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the Bees spent an amazing day at Harry Potter World in Watford. We left school at 7am and arrived back at 8pm. It was a magical, exciting, inspirational and a ‘once in a lifetime’ package of experiences. Many thanks to Mrs Allen for saying ‘Yes’ to our visit and for accompanying us on our adventure!

Investigation Reports

Before the break, we worked in small groups to investigate how the water cycle works. Our experiments benefitted from a week on a sunny windowsill.
Here are just a few of our findings, we thought carefully about using the correct scientific terms too. Over the next couple of days, we will be checking out the puddle on our playground. We’re hoping for some sunshine to help with the water cycle process!

Roman Maths

Today, our maths lesson involved a variety of practical, written and mastery tasks based on Roman numerals.

We used our knowledge to: create clock faces, solve puzzles, ‘build’ calculations, challenge our maths partners, explain our successes and struggles, record answers (written and verbal) and to evaluate our learning. We also learned that the Romans did not have a letter to represent zero!
