An Afternoon of Gaming with Nigel

Year 5 and 6’s brains were pushed to the limit as they had to complete a range of challenges and solve a number of problems. They did this through playing a wide range of fun games. Every child succeeded and it was great to see them enjoying themselves with more ‘traditional’ games.

The Creation Story

In Y6 NS, as part of their Evolution Topic, the children have been reading the Creation Story. They recorded their findings through illustrated storyboards and use of watercolour paint. In AskIt the children have discussed a wide range of theories of creation.

Conker Planting

Back in October Year 6 NS collected lots of conkers from the conker tree in the school grounds.  Over the past few weeks we have enjoyed learning all about these ‘seeds’, admiring their beautiful colours and finding out why they grow in such spiky shells. We then decided to plant the conkers and hope they grow into mini conker trees.

Y6NS’ Reading Corner

 

Y6NS has undergone some changes and the children are very excited. These Year 6 ladies have enjoyed reading in the ‘Christmas Corner’. Thank you to Santa’s little helper (Mrs. Birch) for making it look so appealing.

Winter Flowers

To smarten up the playground, Year 6 NS, Year 6 RH  and Year 2 Woodpeckers have been sweeping up the leaves and planting winter pansies and primroses.  It was hard work and a little bit chilly, but everyone did a great job!

Remembrance Wreath 

Year 6’s poppy wreath is taking shape, ready for the Armistice Service at St. John’s Church on Sunday led by Father David.  You are warmly invited to join the service at 10am.

Year 6 NS’s Class Assembly

 

Year 6 shared with their families how much they had enjoyed the week away to Kingswood and even taught them a new chant. They also shared some of their learning about World War One – through comic sketches, songs and poetry recitals.

Year 6 Visit to Crucial Crew

 

Year 6 enjoyed their day out at Crucial Crew. They learned about first aid, fire safety, E Safety, road safety and park safety. They learned how to ride a bus safely and all about a magistrates court.

Year 6 Residential – #KingswoodColomendy2016

 
The Year 6 children enjoyed an action-packed week in North Wales just before half term. They took part in a range of different activities including archery, soaring through the air on the Giant Zip Wire, crawling through narrow passageways when caving and constructing a vessel to row across the lake in raft building. It was a fantastic exercise and the whole of Year 6 developed as a team.
Thank you to the Governing Body for heavily subsidising the trip, to Miss Hayward, Mrs. Page, Mr. Sandwith, Mrs. Birch and Mr. Birch for supervising the children, to the Kingswood staff for their superb instruction, and to the children for making it such a memorable week.

Guest Author – Andy Seed

Children in Key Stage 2 had a fantastic time learning from award-winning author Andy Seed. They explored different styles of poetry and took part in a range of games inspired by Andy’s own books.

Clay Poppy Sculptures

Year 6 enjoyed being creative and working with clay. The children used the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ as inspiration for their poppy sculptures.

Shafton Space Day 2016

 

Year 6 visited Outwood Shafton to take part in a science-based activity day. The children watched ice cream being made using liquid nitrogen; they went in a planetarium; made comets using water, sand, treacle and dry ice; used telescopes and conducted an experiment to investigate making craters. Thank you to all of the staff who made it such an exciting opportunity for our children.

Cook It – Making Trench Stew

 

Last week, the children took part in a Cook It session and made some mouth-watering Trench Stew. They independently read and followed the instructions; peeled all of the vegetables; used bridge and claw techniques to safely chop the vegetables; safely stirred the boiling mixture and buttered some bread to accompany their meal. All of Year 6 enjoyed tasting this delicious stew. Thank you to Mrs. Birch for all her help!

Cook It – Trench Cake

 

Last week, the children took part in a Cook It session and baked some delicious Trench Cake. They independently read and followed a recipe … measured the ingredients using scales and measuring jugs … experimented with vinegar and baking soda instead of eggs to make the cake rise and used fantastic teamwork skills.

Year 5 Transition

Year 5 had a wonderful day at Outwood Shafton experiencing some exciting transition activities. They competed in Olympic Style teams in dance, Sport, Design & Technology and even music too! A wonderful day, thanks to Outwood Academy Shafton for hosting us.

Superb Homework 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷

In Year 5, we have been studying Greek Pottery and using the iPads to create our own digital masterpieces. This Superstar has downloaded the app at home and produced this excellent effort. Well done, fabulous work.

Perfect Pottery

Year 5DW have really enjoyed researching Ancient Greek pottery. As well as using these beautiful artefacts for their hand drawn skill development, they have used the iPads to produce these digitally mastered creations. Fabulous work, well done everybody.

Homework Magic 🇬🇷🇬🇷

Some more super homework from Year 5DW inspired by our work on the Greek Gods and in this case Poseidon. Poseidon carried a three-pointed spear called a trident; he used this to start earthquakes or bring water out of the ground. Like the sea he ruled, Poseidon could be either calm or stormy. As you might guess, the god of earthquakes had a short temper. When that Trident was used, trouble always resulted!
