Year 6 Trip to The Lion King 2017

Both Year 6 classes had a fabulous day. They loved the coach journey to our capital city, including a 10am ‘lunch’ and a guided tour from our coach drivers at Yorkshire Rose. The Lyceum Theatre was stunning as always, the performance was memorising and our children loved every minute of the outstanding show. Our stop-off at ‘Maccy Ds’ on the way home was a great way to top this special day off.

Thank you to Mrs. Allen MBE and the Friends of Birkwood for providing the children with this amazing opportunity and allowing them to build lifelong memories.

Tangrams!

Y6RH experimented with tangrams as part of a maths lesson. The children used their knowledge of 2D shapes to talk about the properties of each small shape. The small shapes were then used to create other larger shapes and some creations of our own.

Can you guess what new pictures have been made?

Celebration Day

Y6RH have enjoyed a day of exercise, treats and games today to celebrate their hard work during SATs week. It is lovely to see them enjoying some ‘down time’ after completing their assessments. We are very proud of each and every one of you and would like to say ‘thank you’ for being so grown up and working so hard this week and ‘well done’ for showing off all you have learnt at exactly the right time.

I ‘nose’ that you ‘nose’!

Today, children in Y6RH have been working on their reading comprehension skills. They have played a game called I ‘nose’ that you ‘nose’ which helps them develop their skimming and scanning skills. The children have to put their fingers on their noses when they have skimmed through the text and located a target word, this way Miss Hayward ‘nose’ when they have found the word!

Ask a child in Y6RH to explain the game to you!

Recycling Magic!

Year 6 RH have been busy tidying the school grounds by collecting up lots of the leaves. Not only does this make our school look tidier, but the leaves will also rot down in a couple of years giving us free compost.  We love being environmentally friendly!

E-Safety

On Safer Internet Day this year Year 6 RH discussed ‘The Power of the Image’. We talked about first impressions and discussed what sort of first impression we like to make. Next, we talked about how images can create a first impression. We worked in groups to look at different images and shared our thoughts on the first impressions these images gave us. Finally, we thought about how we use images online and discussed the style of photo we could use on our profiles in the future.

Anti-bullying art work

During anti-bullying week we talked about how words can hurt. We discussed how our feelings don’t always show on the surface but can be bubbling away underneath.

We created a piece of art work to show how verbal bullying can affect people. We used sponges and paint to create lava and a stormy sky, then we used collage materials to add the volcano, finally, we jotted words on the inside of the person to show how they may be feeling after experiencing verbal bullying.

What do you think of our work?

Year 6 Residential – #KingswoodColomendy2016

The Year 6 children enjoyed an action-packed week in North Wales just before half term. They took part in a range of different activities including archery, soaring through the air on the Giant Zip Wire, crawling through narrow passageways when caving and constructing a vessel to row across the lake in raft building. It was a fantastic exercise and the whole of Year 6 developed as a team.
Thank you to the Governing Body for heavily subsidising the trip, to Miss Hayward, Mrs. Page, Mr. Sandwith, Mrs. Birch and Mr. Birch for supervising the children, to the Kingswood staff for their superb instruction, and to the children for making it such a memorable week.

Children in Key Stage 2 had a fantastic time learning from award-winning author Andy Seed. They explored different styles of poetry and took part in a range of games inspired by Andy’s own books.

Thank you to Andy for his kind donations for the Reading Bus and for visiting us and sharing his expertise!

Whilst they were tidying the Community Garden  this afternoon, Yr 6 RH discovered there were lots of juicy red raspberries just ready to be picked. Luckily, there were enough for the whole class to have a taste and everyone agreed they were delicious!

Who doesn’t love cauliflower cheese? Year 5 SS certainly do and are hoping the tiny cauliflower seeds they planted will grow into some very tasty vegetables they can eat in #CookIt. Fingers crossed our cauliflowers will look exactly like the one in the picture!

Greek Graphs Year 5SS 🇬🇷🇬🇷 🌡🌡 ⛅⛅⛅

Well done to Year 5SS who have transferred their work on Ancient Greece into the Mathematics Curriculum. They have researched average temperatures in Athens and London and produced some fabulous line graphs to compare the two. From their data, we wonder where most of them would prefer to take a city break – Athens or London? You decide.

Sporting Star of the Week

This week’s Sporting Star allowed Mr. Campbell an extra 10 minute lunch break! She took control of her class warm up before a gymnastics session – unsurprisingly, her example of leadership and working as a role model impressed our Sports Leader so much that she scooped the weekly award. Well done, watch out Mr. Summerfield it could be ‘Big Maths’ she’s teaching next!
