Circus Science Week

All children in Years 1 to 6 had an amazing time learning about science. They used their knowledge of forces and motion, and put it into practice by performing circus acts. It was a really fun and entertaining couple of days. Thank you Nick for visiting, for teaching about pushes, pulls and twists, and for bringing the forces of friction and gravity to life!

Junk Modelling

The Grasshoppers have been learning all about space this half term. We looked at lots of different rockets, flying saucers and space stations, and talked about the important parts of each one. All the children designed their own space craft, and thought about the materials they would use to build their model. Mrs. Whitfield helped us to create our models using junk modelling materials. We had lots of fun!

We are TV chefs!

During Cook It, we made rock cakes. We took lots of photos of ourselves when we were baking, and then we filmed instructions to explain how we made the cakes. Take a look at our video and see if you can make some rock cakes of your own!

The Aliens Are Coming!

In our Cook It week, we made some alien puddings. We worked with Mrs. White to make Angel Delight and Jelly and then we layered them into a cup to make the alien’s body. We made the eyes by putting bendy straws into the mixture, and adding marshmallows and sprinkles to the end. It was very messy, but we had lots of fun!

Year 1 Grasshoppers’ Trip

Year 1 visited the Emergency Services’ Museum in Sheffield. While they were there, they had a great time looking at different emergency vehicles, learning about fire safety, trying on different uniforms and watching firemen go down the ‘fireman’s pole’.

Fireman Daz!

The Grasshoppers had a surprise visit from Fireman Daz! He came to tell us all about fire safety and what it is like to be a firefighter. He even let us try on his uniform!

Thank you Daz – we learnt lots of new things and loved being firefighters for the day!

Shortbread Megastructures

We used our Cook It week to make lots of shortbread! We learnt how to weigh and measure the ingredients, and how to work as a team to mix the ingredients to make our dough. We loved using the rolling pins to roll out our mixture. We decided which shapes we would like to use and cut these out ready for baking. When we had made all the shortbread, we created different megastructures using the shortbread shapes. It was a little messy and sticky using the icing, but we had lots of fun! What famous megastructures can you see in our work?

Stunning Homework!

Year 1 Grasshoppers were asked to make their own megastructures for their homework. We had some amazing creations as you can see! The children made bridges, Lego versions of Big Ben, army bases and even baked their very own Eiffel Tower. Well done everyone and thank you to our #incrediblecommunity for your continued support.

Megastructures!

We are learning all about megastructures this half term.  We were set a challenge to see if we could build our own towers and bridges – but we could only use newspaper and sellotape! Take a look at our pictures to see how we got on with our challenges – we found it tough but had lots of fun!

Fantastic Freeze Framing

This week the Grasshoppers have been using the story ‘Owl Babies’ in their learning. We did some amazing freeze framing yesterday. These photos show how the three Owl Babies (Sarah, Percy and Bill) were feeling when they realised their mother had gone!

Year 1 Grasshoppers’ Class Assembly

What a fantastic performance! The Grasshoppers amazed their audience with their knights and castle themed production. Everyone was impressed with all of the work displayed in their classroom, the performance of ‘George and the Dragon’ and the songs about knights.

Thank you to our #incrediblecommunity for their ongoing support.

Year 1 Grasshoppers’ Trip to Bolsover Castle

The Grasshoppers had a great time visiting Bolsover Castle. We spent the day exploring the ruins and talking about the size of the rooms – we couldn’t believe how big they were! The dungeons were horrible and we didn’t like being down there! In the afternoon, we looked around the smaller house and learnt about the people who used to live in the castle. We really enjoyed pretending to be Kings and Queens and sitting on the thrones. We finished off the day by having some fun in the play area and visiting the gift shop. We had a wonderful day!

Instructions

This week, we are learning how to write instructions. Today, in literacy, we looked at and ordered a set of instructions for how to make a jam sandwich. Then, we tried out our instructions to see if they worked! We loved eating our sandwiches!

Cook It

The Year 1 Grasshoppers have been busy making gingerbread men this week! The children really enjoyed weighing and measuring all their ingredients and gave their muscles a good work out stirring everything together. They loved the smells during baking time and even helped Mrs. White to wash up when they had finished.

At the end of the week, the children decorated their gingerbread men and enjoyed eating one in class and then took one home for grown-ups to try – we hope you enjoyed them!

Super number work!

Today the Y1 Grasshoppers having been showing off their number skills. They have used cubes to make ‘snakes’. Everybody counted really carefully and made a snake of 10 cubes. We all tried to make one snake that was bigger than 10 and one snake that was smaller than 10 and we labelled each snake to say how many cubes we had used!
