Circus Science Week

All children in Years 1 to 6 had an amazing time learning about science. They used their knowledge of forces and motion, and put it into practice by performing circus acts. It was a really fun and entertaining couple of days. Thank you Nick for visiting, for teaching about pushes, pulls and twists, and for bringing the forces of friction and gravity to life!

Magic Stars

This half term, our Cook It week linked to our classroom learning through our Space topic and our focus text, ‘The Magic Finger’. The children loved making and eating their delicious Magic Stars! Afterwards, we used imperative (bossy) verbs to write up the recipe for our Big Write. Following on from this, children made up their own recipe for a magic potion. Watch out for our magic fingers!

Capacity

This week in maths, the Dragonflies are taking a very practical approach to capacity. Children have worked in small groups to compare which containers hold more and which hold less, as well as estimating how many smaller containers it takes to fill a larger one. We have introduced the concept of 1 litre and children are learning to use the language of full, empty, quarter, half and three quarters full. Estimating then measuring using non standard units such as small bricks has also helped us to understand and compare which containers hold least and most. Can you say which containers hold more or less than 1 litre?

Addition and Subtraction

This week in Maths, the Year 1 Dragonflies have been learning to add and subtract one digit and two numbers to 20. We found it very interesting to look at and discuss equality and we all understand that a 10 stick is equal to 10 ones. Children were able to show, using the equipment, their understanding of place value and talk about how the objects related to the written number. This practical work has helped our mental methods and some children can now add really quickly in their heads!

Seed Experts

Year 1 Dragonflies and Year 2 Robins have been busy in the poly tunnel this week planting onion, spinach, sweetcorn and runner bean seeds for the Community Garden. What’s your favourite vegetable?

Year 1 Dragonflies’ Class Assembly

What an amazing performance! The Dragonflies retold the story of ‘The Great Fire of London’ through narration, drama, song and dance. The audience was very entertained by the show. Thank you to our #incrediblecommunity for your continued support, and well done Dragonflies!

FIRE! FIRE!

As the Dragonflies’ ‘Fire! Fire!’ topic drew to a close, we found it very interesting to compare the 1666 fire service to the modern day fire service. Our visit to the emergency museum in Sheffield helped us to understand the changes over time, and a special visit to school from Firefighter Darren helped us to understand the dangers of fire.

Investigating Fractions

In Maths, the Dragonflies have been working on fractions. We have been finding a quarter and three quarters of shapes as well as exploring half of a quantity.

The Great Fire of London

This half term, the Dragonflies have been inspired by our ‘Fire Fire!’ topic. We took a trip down a time tunnel to meet the Pudding Lane baker, Thomas Farrinor, and his family who told us of the devastation of the Great Fire of London in 1666.

We have created diary entries and fire pictures, and now know plenty of facts about this important historical event.

More Film It from the Dragonflies

During their second Film It Week of  the year, the Dragonflies have enjoyed developing some new skills on the iPads. All children worked in threes to take photos of class work. Afterwards, they took turns to add titles and text to complete the film. They even added credits! Here is one example:

Grow It 2018

After School Gardening Club have been making some delicious cakes for our garden birds. Instead of mixing eggs, flour and sugar together, they have been using dried fruit, oats, sunflower hearts and dried meal worms! Our feathered friends definitely won’t go hungry this winter!

Cook It Week

In our Cook It sessions, Year 1 have been making fruit skewers. They all enjoyed the colourful activity and thought their end results looked like a mega structure! During the sessions, the children discussed where the fruit came from, how it grows and whether the fruit was in season or not. Year 1 learned how to cut safely, chop correctly (trying to use a ‘bridge’ technique), and they even know that they do not use knives without an adult present. Well done, Dragonflies!

Maths this Week…

This week, we have been identifying and describing 2D shapes. Children have made shapes with their own body to become familiar with key vocabulary and working with shapes in different orientations. We all know the shape names and even played guessing games using riddles. Some children came up with their own riddle.

Can you guess this one? ‘I am a 2D shape with four edges. My edges are straight. My edges are equal length. What shape am I?’

In IT, this term …

…we first learned how to log on and off computers in the IT suite, mastering our skills with a keyboard and a mouse. Recently, we have been learning about greetings cards and even searched up images on Google to use in our own cards!

Y1 Dragonflies

The Dragonflies enjoyed reading ‘Bob Robber and Dancing Jane’ by Andrew Matthews. What wonderful descriptions and instructions the children have written inspired by the tender use of vocabulary in the text. We also used drama to act out setting. The children have been identifying and using adjectives and imperative verbs in their work and are looking forward to finding out if Bob Robber can change his thieving ways!

Fantastic Counting

In maths, we have been trying to achieve our learning objective of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Some of the children have even started to learn the sequences backwards. We decided to do some maths outside, grouping ourselves in to 2s and 10s to make 20. Back in the classroom we enjoyed making an array of 4 lines of 5.

Knights and Castles

The Dragonflies have absolutely loved their topic – Castles and Knights. In literacy, we have been learning about and writing our own versions of traditional stories. In the provisional areas it has been amazing to see the art, role play and small world work too.

Year 1 start to Film It!

The children have been fantastic when using iPads! They have taken photos, put them in order and told our adults what they would like to type on the video in the text boxes.

All About Me

We have been exploring writing linked to our topic ‘ All About Me!’ in our first days as Year 1 Dragonflies. Children have worked independently and in small groups to create some pieces to be very proud of.
