Take 2…

Following their wonderful Assembly, The Leopards gave an encore in Special Assembly. The ‘Please Mrs. Butler’ was performed alongside the demonstration of the strength of a drinking straw! It was quite clear that the participants enjoy Science and have learnt the properties of many materials during their topic of ‘Mega Structures.’ Well done on your hard work this term!

A First Class Assembly

An enormous ‘Well Done!’ to all of our Year 1 Leopards including Miss Horne, Mrs. White, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Taylor for their first ever Class Assembly. Including Science Experiments, Stories – both the Three Little Pigs AND Three Billy Goats Gruff, Maths Sums, an alphabet song and an amazing performance of ‘Please Mrs. Butler,’ the Assembly provided great entertainment! The children were wonderful, appeared nerveless and definitely enjoyed sharing some fabulous work with the whole school and a very large number of our supportive parents. Very well done, a great effort!

Scientific Enquiries by Leopards

Year One Leopards have been classifying materials in their Science work with Miss Horne. They have also conducted a range of experiments on strength and compared lollypop sticks and art straws. Be sure to attend their Assembly on 7th February in order to share their conclusions!

Headteacher’s Superstar Award

Many congratulations to the week’s Superstar Award Winner. From Year 1 Leopards, her testimonial from Miss Horne features the word ‘always’: she always tries her best, always works hard, is always kind to others and always sets a great Birkwood example. A wonderful collection of reasons for this well deserved award! Well done!

Christmas Soirée

Our choir, ballroom dancers and drama group entertained us in tremendous fashion at the annual Christmas Soiree. The drama group starred several Year 5 pupils in lead roles as they treated us to a version of Scrooge. Several fabulous debuts were made! The Ballroom team performed wonderfully well with children from Years 1-6 involved. Our choir shared some Young Voices material as well as leading carols around the tree! A wonderful, evening, well done to everyone involved, especially Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Porter for their hard work and organisation.

Ballroom Exhibition

Our Ballroom Dancers graced the Metrodome again at the Team Barnsley Christmas Event. In a crowd of approximately 300, Birkwood sold over 200 tickets! Our fabulous parents showed terrific support to children from years 1-6! Miss Betts even carried off the raffle prize – which she promptly donated to the Soiree Evening (thank you Miss Betts for that kind gesture). Well done to Mrs. Porter for her tireless work in dance and to the many children involved – some as young as 5! Also, www.birkwood.org.uk would like to thank Mr Thompson for the Ballroom and Soirée photographs which he has kindly allowed us to use for these website entries!

Party planners

The Tigers worked really hard on their TASC day last week, their job was to plan their own Christmas party.

Miss Betts and Mrs Porter took a back seat and let the tigers plan the whole thing, they came up with some brilliant ideas.

They talked about what would make a good party and then decided what to make. They made, crackers, hats, balloons, a table cloth, a pin the tail on the tiger game, a tiger piñata and a fabulous disco ball.  As you can see from the photos it was a busy, but extremely fun day.

Christmas Celebration

Key Stage 1 led our Christmas Celebration with a wonderful version of the Nativity Story. Key Stage 2 helped with the singing although the main stars were certainly our younger children. With multiple narrators, the speaking was superb. The huge audience certainly enjoyed our version of this most famous story. Many thanks to the staff, led by Mrs Exley who worked so hard on the script, singing and costume. Our parents, as always, turned out in great numbers to enjoy this festive event that reminded us why we celebrate Christmas.

And the Winner is………………

Our 2011 Conker Winner is from Year 1! This is the first time our winner has come from outside Year 6. He received his award in Special Assembly in front of the whole school! Well done on your achievement! A real smasher!

Headteacher’s Superstar Award

This week’s winner of our Headteacher’s Superstar Award comes from the Tigers! Anyone who attended their Class Assembly will understand why he is the chosen one following his superb presentation to the audience, (whole school + parents) of the various parts to a Castle! Of course, he works hard in every subject and sets a great example to his fellow Tigers. Well done, a very popular choice!
