Me and My Shadow

Today’s science investigation focused on shadows. We used opaque, translucent and transparent objects in natural light (yes, the sun did put in an appearance on this winter’s day) and artificial light.

Bake Off

The Woodpeckers enjoyed using their weighing measuring, estimating and sharing skills during their cook-it week. There’s enchanted ‘Narnia Cakes’ on the menu, complete with Turkish Delight.

Make Over

Our reading corner has had a mini make over. These children enjoyed snuggling up with a book and new furry cushions at lunchtime.

Christmas Has Come Early!

What a lovely surprise when Mrs Allen came to our classroom with some beautiful books! We are delighted, and we are really looking forward to sharing them soon.

Thank you for your kindness Mrs Allen.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe- Update.

The Woodpeckers are loving C.S.Lewis’ classic story. We have been wondering what Turkish Delight tastes like since we read about Edmund’s favourite food. Everybody tried it and most of our class thought it was delicious-they even asked politely for another piece. This made us wonder if Marks and Spencer sell ‘enchanted’ Turkish Delight!

Design It!

Everyone in Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed their first ever lesson linked to design. After excellent support from the Design Museum in Kensington, we are encouraging the children to consider iconic designs, style, practical use, safety, ethical issues and marketing. Discussion and questioning was interesting, exciting and carefully considered. Here are a few clips which capture our pupils’ enthusiasm towards Open Futures’ new Design It strand.

“….Always winter, never Christmas” – C.S.Lewis

Our ‘Narnia characters’ display is coming on a treat. The good news is that Christmas WILL arrive (in all its glory – sparkle and shine) very shortly at Birkwood!

Dream (Y3) Team

The Woodpeckers were joined by the Kingfishers from Year 3. Their mission… to investigate reflection. The children worked in small teams to compare their reflections in plane, concave and convex mirrors. We laughed when we were upside down!

We are so proud of the progress these sisters have made. They joined our school eleven weeks ago and look at their handwriting now!

Sharing Our Musical Talents

Who should drop by during our Year 3 class brass lesson today?… One of our Year 6 experienced euphonium players. Within seconds, Mr. Dodd had written a part for him to accompany our round. We are getting good with our Kodaly hand signs too.

Science – We LOVED It!

Who would have thought that a science experiment could make you giggle? We loved investigating how the pupils in our eyes let light in. We closed the blinds, turned off the lights, watched our partner’s pupils closely and turned the lights back on again – Wow!

Stepping into Narnia

We loved dressing as Lucy, Susan and Peter from the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe. What a shame that it wasn’t snowing!

Super Seven

We completed our very first attempt at Birkwood’s Magic Mile; here are the quickest seven finishers so far. Let’s see who has the stamina and determination to improve on their personal best over this next half term.

The Woodpeckers worked in small teams to shoot, produce and edit a short film, using iMovie. Their brief was to highlight the importance of Anti Bullying Week 2017.

We Have Got Boogie Shoes!

The Woodpeckers are making excellent progress in their weekly class brass lessons. The children thoroughly enjoy their lessons with Mr. Dodd. He is hoping to invite some of our Year 3s to join up with our Year 6 Birkwood Brass stars before long. Keep up the hard work (in your boogie shoes) Woodpeckers!

Topic Update

It’s time for a new topic in the Woodpeckers and we’re already inspired to read and write with enthusiasm, skill and enjoyment! C.S Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has well and truly got us gripped!

Book Worms

Thanks to Mrs Allen for the great book that she gifted to our class this week. Four days on and we’re more than half way through Adrian Edmundson’s brilliant children’s novel ‘Tilly and the Time Machine’.

Dictionary Day

Children worked in pairs to check the meaning of words. They also used the first two or three letters of a word to check its spelling.

Our Mining Heritage

The Woodpeckers presented their learning beautifully this afternoon. The children shared poetry, movement, drama and factual, historical information. We are really proud of each and every pupil for their first class performance – well done! Thank you to our #incrediblecommunity for their support.

Clever Calculations

In the Year 3 Woodpeckers, we worked ever so hard to use formal written methods successfully, and neatly too.

When Autumn Came Indoors.

Our knowledge, experiences, research and ‘evidence’ all came together beautifully this morning. We wrote poetry independently, paying special attention to rhythm, pattern and ‘Things of Beauty’.

Christmas During the Strike

These comprehension activities were based on differentiated non fiction texts, linked to the miners’ strike of 1984-85. The children worked particularly well to distinguish types of questions. Great detective skills too!

Musical Genres

The children are taking the time to learn about music from a variety of musical genres. They are also learning to appreciate musicians from contrasting cultures, backgrounds and eras.

Working in a Coal Mine!

What a fantastic day we had at the National Coal Mining Museum.

We travelled deep under the ground to experience life as a real miner – exciting and chilly too!

We loved exploring the exhibits and we were delighted that it was a sunny (but breezy) day! This meant that we could spend time enjoying the amazing, new, mining-themed adventure play area.

The pit ponies were one of our star attractions. We also loved our trip to the pithead baths. T.C. (one of our tour guides) made us laugh when he was telling us about his Mum washing the dirty clothes in the  tin bath – T.C. and his brothers and sisters got in the same water, once the clothes were clean!

Today, we certainly were creative learners – a day to remember!

Macmillan Café 2017

Our Macmillan Coffee Day was amazing. Year 2/3 Kingfishers and Year 3 Woodpeckers ran our Community Café throughout the day; donations of cakes, buns and biscuits were much appreciated. A very special day for a very special cause. All children in school were invited and visited the Café, parents and families then joined us and we raised an amazing £500! Thank you to our #IncredibleCommunity for the support – what a successful day!

Magic Mining Memories

We were visited by one of our classes’ Granddads (and our caretaker Mr Jones). He shared his knowledge and experiences of mining in Barnsley during the 1980s. Thank you so much Mr. Jones!
