Year 2 Woodpeckers’ Trip to Scarborough

The Woodpeckers had a fantastic day out at Scarborough. The sun was shining (thankfully) so the children got to complete all of the planned activities! The children loved the pirate ship ride and the ride on the donkeys and they had a delicious ice cream. The day was so action-packed that some of our children (and special helpers) had a little nap on the bus home.

The Turtles enjoyed observing snails in science this week.

The children wrote questions about the snails on post-it notes. We talked about how we could answer their questions by thinking, using our senses, using an information book or computer, or by trying something out. We organised the children’s questions into these different approaches, then had a go at answering some of them. The children decided we could use the ‘try something out’ approach to answer the question ‘What do snails eat?’. Our snail visitors enjoyed eating carrot, potato and leaves.”

The Turtles have been using 2 way microscopes to look closely at mini beasts or ‘invertebrates’.

They looked carefully at the different body parts then used identification sheets and information books to identify the invertebrate. They considered how the invertebrate was similar to themselves and how it was most different from themselves.

In science this half term the Turtles are going ‘On Safari’ to hunt for mini beasts around our school grounds.

The children learnt that the correct scientific work for mini beasts is invertebrates and that invertebrates do not have a backbone. The children found a number of invertebrates including a worm, beetle, ant and woodlouse. We are starting to learn about their different body parts, what they eat and their habitat.
