Julie Allen M.B.E.

Birkwood welcomed a special visitor on Monday morning: ‘Our’ Carol, Mrs. Allen’s sister. Carol May announced that Mrs.  Allen is to receive an M.B.E. for Services to Education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List!

Special visitors, including family, governors and Mr. Wood, all helped the children and staff to celebrate this very prestigious award. Mrs. Allen will visit Buckingham Palace, with her family, in the near future to receive the M.B.E. and meet Her Majesty the Queen (remember to curtsey Mrs Allen.)

All of the staff, children and members of our #incrediblecommunity are all very proud of your award Mrs. Allen; you truly deserve it!

Awesome Audition Opportunity

Our ‘musicals star’ has worked really hard to prepare a monologue and acapella song for an audition. We wish her all the very best with her first step on, what we know will be, a very exciting future on the stage!

Birkwood Brass in Concert with Grimethorpe Colliery Band!

Friend of our school, Professor Roger Webster, is a great supporter of Birkwood Brass. When he visited our school recently, he invited the children to perform alongside the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the Mayor’s charity concert. We were delighted to accept.

The evening was amazing. Our children opened the concert and received applause and loud cheers too. Grimethorpe Colliery Band kept all of us thoroughly entertained with a wide variety of musical styles. They really are THE BEST!

We were also treated to a virtuosic solo by Professor Webster-The children were VERY impressed.

What a night to remember for the rest of our lives! We were pleased that Barnsley’s dementia charities will benefit financially from the concert too.

Thank You for the Music!

Our brass group were visited by WORLD FAMOUS cornet player Professor Roger Webster. He was extremely complementary about their playing. Roger (along with instrument makers Besson) have supported our brass projects from day 1. Our children were keen to ‘catch up’ with Roger – they asked for his autograph and played some of the gifted instruments for the very first time.

Watch this space for more brass news very soon!

The Grand Opening of The Birkwood Reading Bus

What a fantastic afternoon! Our VIPs were amazed by the finished product and by a wonderful afternoon tea, with Kim’s Beautiful Cakes. Councillor Wraith, who gave a very generous donation, officially opened our bus and Father David followed with a blessing.

We would all like to say a huge thank you to everybody who has helped to make The Birkwood Reading Bus into something that our #incrediblecommunity can be immensely proud of. Thank you to Mrs. White, the Friends of Birkwood and our #incrediblecommunity for their support and to Mrs. Allen for having such a fantastic vision.

Brass Stars – Grade 3 and 4!

Two of our outstanding musicians travelled to the ABRSM centre, at Barnsley Civic, to sit their euphonium exams. They coped well with their nerves and performed really well. The examiner suggested that both pupils should celebrate with cake and milkshake – honest, he did!

Moved by Art Project

Our brass group have thoroughly enjoyed every step of the way in this amazing creative project. During the Autumn term 2016, our musicians worked with composer Lucy Pankhurst, poet James Nash and instrument maker Paul Jefferies on a variety of creative projects. Their focus was The Civic’s installation of Cornelia Parker’s  Perpetual Canon.
This weekend, our brass group performed with Barnsley Brass in the premiere of Lux Redux by Lucy Pankhurst. The weather in the park was beautiful – it was a real musical celebration!

Building a Bug Hotel

Key Stage 2 Gardening Club have been preparing the wildlife garden to welcome some very special guests: bugs, beetles and insects!  They have been building a bug hotel by stacking wooden pallets on top of each other (thanks to Emily Hand’s Daddy) and starting to fill the gaps with old bricks, pieces of wood and dry leaves. When it is completely finished, our bug hotel will be a warm dry place for insects to create their nests over the summer, hibernate during the winter and emerge next spring to help us in the garden by keeping pests down and attracting birds.  Great teamwork everybody!
