Week Five…

One of our newest musicians received her fifth flute lesson this week. We are delighted with her progress, and proud that she is confident enough to share her learning with classmates.

CharCOAL Art!

The Kingfishers really enjoyed recreating some charcoal art inspired by Mrs Gill’s talented sister. They used the charcoal to create pit wheels, the finished products were amazing.

When Autumn Came Indoors.

Our knowledge, experiences, research and ‘evidence’ all came together beautifully this morning. We wrote poetry independently, paying special attention to rhythm, pattern and ‘Things of Beauty’.

Wedding of the Century!

The Year 2 Robins had an amazing afternoon visiting St. John the Baptist Church to celebrate the ‘marriage’ of two of our amazing children. When we got back to school we carried on the festivities and enjoyed a little party.

Thank you to Father David and our #IncredibleCommunity for their continued support.

Christmas During the Strike

These comprehension activities were based on differentiated non fiction texts, linked to the miners’ strike of 1984-85. The children worked particularly well to distinguish types of questions. Great detective skills too!

Musical Genres

The children are taking the time to learn about music from a variety of musical genres. They are also learning to appreciate musicians from contrasting cultures, backgrounds and eras.

The Woodpeckers have only had five lessons with Mr. Dodd and we are already spotting a few stars of the future. One of these stars is already playing duets with Mr. Dodd!

Working in a Coal Mine!

What a fantastic day we had at the National Coal Mining Museum.

We travelled deep under the ground to experience life as a real miner – exciting and chilly too!

We loved exploring the exhibits and we were delighted that it was a sunny (but breezy) day! This meant that we could spend time enjoying the amazing, new, mining-themed adventure play area.

The pit ponies were one of our star attractions. We also loved our trip to the pithead baths. T.C. (one of our tour guides) made us laugh when he was telling us about his Mum washing the dirty clothes in the  tin bath – T.C. and his brothers and sisters got in the same water, once the clothes were clean!

Today, we certainly were creative learners – a day to remember!

Macmillan Café 2017

Our Macmillan Coffee Day was amazing. Year 2/3 Kingfishers and Year 3 Woodpeckers ran our Community Café throughout the day; donations of cakes, buns and biscuits were much appreciated. A very special day for a very special cause. All children in school were invited and visited the Café, parents and families then joined us and we raised an amazing £500! Thank you to our #IncredibleCommunity for the support – what a successful day!

Magic Mining Memories

We were visited by one of our classes’ Granddads (and our caretaker Mr Jones). He shared his knowledge and experiences of mining in Barnsley during the 1980s. Thank you so much Mr. Jones!

Here’s our Community Café advertisement.

On Thursday 28th September, the Woodpeckers and the Kingfishers will be working in the famous Birkwood Café. All of the money raised will go to the fantastic charity, Macmillan. The café is open throughout the day for pupils (don’t forget your 50p) and the whole school community after school.

#GrowIt in Year 2/3 Kingfishers

The Year 2/3 Kingfishers have been busy harvesting lots  of different vegetables from the Community Garden. They picked celery, red and white onions, tomatoes and green and yellow courgettes for Year 2’s after school Cook-It club to make into a tasty dish.

Poor Bob!

Bob the Artist was our story stimulus for philosophy. The children selected a question which stirred up discussion, disagreement and experiences of name calling.

Canaries Created by Kingfishers

After The Kingfishers learned about the importance of canaries in Victorian Mines, they had a go at painting their own. They then finished them off nicely with a pasta cage. Great Artwork!

Stepping back in Time

We learned all about the Oakes Mining Disaster of 1866. On the 12th December, 361 men and boys lost their lives. This happened just 3 miles from our school, in Cudworth. Reports tell us that the many explosions could be heard for miles around and it ‘snowed’ black dust!

Today was Hustings for potential School Councillors in the Year 3 Woodpeckers. We had many applicants, all with excellent ‘pitches’. The votes are in, verified and…..top secret until assembly!

Our Science Lesson Was ‘Rock’ ing!

We learned new scientific vocabulary to help us investigate the properties of rocks. Rocks can be permeable (we tested using water), chalky (we tested using vinegar), hard (we tested by scratching with coins) and they can sink (we tested by putting in deep water). We examined our findings closely, using magnifying glasses. We reported our findings on film today.

Our first ‘new topic’ lesson was brought to life by real mining artefacts. We spent time sharing thoughts, ideas, opinions and knowledge about our very own mining heritage.

Year 1/2 Kingfishers Trip to Scarborough

The Kingfishers had an amazing time in Scarborough. The weather was glorious and the sun shone all day. The pirate ship ride was very exciting and we felt like real pirates; we also felt very important on the donkeys. We loved our ice-creams even if we did eat a bit of sand with them too!

Year 2 Woodpeckers’ Trip to Scarborough

The Woodpeckers had a fantastic day out at Scarborough. The sun was shining (thankfully) so the children got to complete all of the planned activities! The children loved the pirate ship ride and the ride on the donkeys and they had a delicious ice cream. The day was so action-packed that some of our children (and special helpers) had a little nap on the bus home.

The Robins visit Canon Hall Farm

What a fabulous day! We all had:

  • a guided tour by Rachel when we learnt all about the animals
  • lunch in our own room
  • playtime on the adventure playground
  • a milking demonstration and then chilling out with an ice-lolly.

Thank you Mrs Allen, we loved every minute!
