The last winner of the award for the February Half Term is from Year 2! He has impressed Mrs. Exley so much that he has recently earned the Star of the Week for Year 2 and now the whole school award. He always gives of his best and is willing to try new things independently! Very well done, a superb effort!
Our Year 2 School Councillor sketched an impression of how the ‘new’ school field may look following the announcements of our improvement plans. It’s fair to say that if his ideas come anywhere near reality, then the children of Birkwood are in for a huge treat! The sketch is even more impressive in reality, although we’re sure you will enjoy this scanned version! Well done, a top effort!
Year 2 have begun their topic on ‘Mega Structures’ ~ here are some fabulous models to enjoy!
Our choir, ballroom dancers and drama group entertained us in tremendous fashion at the annual Christmas Soiree. The drama group starred several Year 5 pupils in lead roles as they treated us to a version of Scrooge. Several fabulous debuts were made! The Ballroom team performed wonderfully well with children from Years 1-6 involved. Our choir shared some Young Voices material as well as leading carols around the tree! A wonderful, evening, well done to everyone involved, especially Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Porter for their hard work and organisation. Our Ballroom Dancers graced the Metrodome again at the Team Barnsley Christmas Event. In a crowd of approximately 300, Birkwood sold over 200 tickets! Our fabulous parents showed terrific support to children from years 1-6! Miss Betts even carried off the raffle prize – which she promptly donated to the Soiree Evening (thank you Miss Betts for that kind gesture). Well done to Mrs. Porter for her tireless work in dance and to the many children involved – some as young as 5! Year 2 gave a wonderful Class Assembly on the theme of Knights and Castles. The Assembly, written by the children was extremely popular – so much so it was standing room only! Many thanks to all of the parents, friends and Governors who attended this most informative event. The Princesses were beautiful, the Knights dashing and chivalrous as the assembly finished with a wonderful song. Well done Year 2, a superb entertaining event! Class 2 are really happy their assessments are finished for the time being and are continuing to enjoy their topic work. Mrs Exley is really pleased that children are making things at home and bringing them in for display, thank you.
The children in Class 2 joined in the fun on Friday to raise money for Children in Need. Lots of the children dressed up and every one of them contributed by coming in non-uniform and paying 50p for the privilege. They enjoyed the fair in the afternoon, especially the cake stall but they all enjoyed the dancing crocodile the most!

Our latest Headteacher’s Award Winner is from Year 2. She received her award in Monday’s Assembly and showed great joy upon hearing the news. She comes to school every day and tries her best in everything she does. She always offers a smile and displays admirable commitment to all things Birkwood! She is a real star and her excitement at this achievement was wonderful to see. Well done. We are very proud of you!
