National Coal Mining Museum

Work from Year 3 is on display at the National Coal Mining Museum thanks to Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Whitfield.

The wonderful display is near the pit baths, in a small, well-used classroom and on show for the many schools who visit this fabulous resource. The work is from our ‘Local Area’ Topic and has Coal Mining as its theme, including photographs from the visit of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

The building which is housing our work was originally the ‘Miners’ Pantry’ where the miners ate their ‘snap!’ We are extremely proud to show our work to the world and congratulate the children and staff in Year 3 on their achievements!

Viking Crafts Day

Class 3 had a Viking craft day. During a whole day of exciting activities the children were given opportunities to work with a variety of art materials. The children prepared and selected appropriate materials and equipment and created weavings and shields in small groups. The activity was carefully planned to encourage the development of complex speaking and listening skills; activities also enabled the children to develop their creative and social skills. The weaving and life-sized shields from our Viking crafts day are proudly displayed in Class 3′s classroom.

Top Secret

Class 3 are planning an extra special surprize for Mother’s Day; the children are working on a clay-based project. The rest is…..top secret; all class 3 mums will just have to wait and see!

Big Writing

Class 3 really enjoyed their Big Write task, sharing their detailed knowledge of Viking Longships and were encouraged to focus on using newly discovered vocabulary. The children were also asked to include the correct punctuation in their work. Atmospheric music by Brian Eno played quietly in the background, as the children completed their writing. Mrs Sutton is really pleased with the quality of work created by class 3!

Baking in Year 3

Class 3 were visited by a representative from Warburton’s Bakery on Tuesday. The children were given the opportunity to make fantastic hedgehog bread rolls. Warburton’s provided aprons and hair nets, as well as a fantastic bag of goodies for each child to take home!

Christmas Soirée

Our choir, ballroom dancers and drama group entertained us in tremendous fashion at the annual Christmas Soiree. The drama group starred several Year 5 pupils in lead roles as they treated us to a version of Scrooge. Several fabulous debuts were made! The Ballroom team performed wonderfully well with children from Years 1-6 involved. Our choir shared some Young Voices material as well as leading carols around the tree! A wonderful, evening, well done to everyone involved, especially Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Porter for their hard work and organisation.

Ballroom Exhibition

Our Ballroom Dancers graced the Metrodome again at the Team Barnsley Christmas Event. In a crowd of approximately 300, Birkwood sold over 200 tickets! Our fabulous parents showed terrific support to children from years 1-6! Miss Betts even carried off the raffle prize – which she promptly donated to the Soiree Evening (thank you Miss Betts for that kind gesture). Well done to Mrs. Porter for her tireless work in dance and to the many children involved – some as young as 5! Also, www.birkwood.org.uk would like to thank Mr Thompson for the Ballroom and Soirée photographs which he has kindly allowed us to use for these website entries!

Merry Christmas in Year 3

Class 3 had a fun-packed party day this week. We began with mid-morning cinema; the children enjoyed an exciting movie. During the afternoon the children joined class 4 in the hall for party games, dancing and a talent show. Last but not least came the party food: cakes, crisps and juice, followed by a mobile phone call from Father Christmas himself!

Year 3 ‘Down t’Pit’

Class 3 had a wonderful day trip to Caphouse Colliery as part of their local community topic. Each and every one of the class took a trip 140 metres underground to explore the mine.

Fan’TASC’tic

Class 3 were presented with a TASC day activity; they were given the challenge of decorating a real Christmas tree in their classroom. A wide variety of materials and equipment were available for the children to select. Class 3’s tree looks spectacular!

Birkwood Choir & Grimethorpe Band – A Wonderful Event

What a wonderful evening for our school community!  We had over 250 children, staff, parents, governors and friends of our school who shared in an extravaganza of music.  Our choir showcased their talents alongside Grimethorpe Colliery Band, a gentleman Keith Neale who is a tour guide at Caphouse Colliery opened the evening with a poem and set the tone.  We were all so very proud, thank you for your support and thank you especially to Mrs Esther Sutton whose dream it was for organising such a great night and to all the staff who supported her.  Highlights included an amazing euphonium solo from Michael Dodd and non-choir members joining in with ‘A World in Union.’ See the video clip for a taste of this unforgettable experience.
