Following their 3rd place at the 2012 Barnsley Schools’ Dance Competition, the Foundation Team gave a wonderful exhibition of their talents in assembly this week.
The team received great support from parents and grandparents and as always, were coached wonderfully well by Mrs. Porter.
The children have shown great determination and perseverance in their mastering of the latest routine. Well done to everyone concerned!
Any team looks forward to a new kit and thanks to great friends of our school, Mr. and Mrs. Burghin, we at Birkwood are now excited about our new Inter Milan style number! The kit, manufactured by Nike is complete with R Burghin, Joiner & Handyman sponsorship on the front, and B&Q Trade Point Sponsorship above the numbers on its reverse. Mr. and Mrs. Burghin joined our Special Assembly in order to present the kit to Mrs. Allen. From everyone at www.birkwood.org.uk an enormous thank you goes to the donators, if we play as good as we’ll look then look out! Of course should you require any Handyman and Joinery assistance, Richard would be delighted to take your call on 07908 143980. R Burghin Joiner & Handyman and Birkwood - A Great Team!
The Year 6 Victorian Homework has started with a bang and in one case a delicious one at that! The children have a list of homework tasks, shown on the website and are encouraged to complete one task per week, in any order. Here we have a Victorian Booklet – researched on the internet, a Victorian Middle/ Upper Class Home and the Queen’s favourite snack – A Victorian Sandwich Cake. Queen Victoria enjoyed this sponge so much that her name has been associated with the cake for over one hundred years! The cake was reviewed by an eager Dad who said, “The cake was moist and fresh tasting. Delicious!” Well done to these children, a great start to the Homework Challenge!
Well done to this Year 6 boy and his Dad for their wonderful recreation of the Battle of Britain aircraft as seen. Their meticulous model making work, completed over a weekend has been shared with the whole school in Assembly. Well done boys, a wonderful effort!
Our choir, ballroom dancers and drama group entertained us in tremendous fashion at the annual Christmas Soiree. The drama group starred several Year 5 pupils in lead roles as they treated us to a version of Scrooge. Several fabulous debuts were made! The Ballroom team performed wonderfully well with children from Years 1-6 involved. Our choir shared some Young Voices material as well as leading carols around the tree! A wonderful, evening, well done to everyone involved, especially Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Porter for their hard work and organisation.
Our Ballroom Dancers graced the Metrodome again at the Team Barnsley Christmas Event. In a crowd of approximately 300, Birkwood sold over 200 tickets! Our fabulous parents showed terrific support to children from years 1-6! Miss Betts even carried off the raffle prize – which she promptly donated to the Soiree Evening (thank you Miss Betts for that kind gesture). Well done to Mrs. Porter for her tireless work in dance and to the many children involved – some as young as 5! Also, www.birkwood.org.uk would like to thank Mr Thompson for the Ballroom and Soirée photographs which he has kindly allowed us to use for these website entries!
What a wonderful evening for our school community! We had over 250 children, staff, parents, governors and friends of our school who shared in an extravaganza of music. Our choir showcased their talents alongside Grimethorpe Colliery Band, a gentleman Keith Neale who is a tour guide at Caphouse Colliery opened the evening with a poem and set the tone. We were all so very proud, thank you for your support and thank you especially to Mrs Esther Sutton whose dream it was for organising such a great night and to all the staff who supported her. Highlights included an amazing euphonium solo from Michael Dodd and non-choir members joining in with ‘A World in Union.’ See the video clip for a taste of this unforgettable experience.
Our School Choir had a fabulous day and then night at the Young Voices 2011 Event at Sheffield Arena. Performing alongside stars such as Connie Talbot from Britain’s Got Talent and US Number 1 fame, they wowed an audience well into 4 figures! There were many highlights including Irish Folk Songs, A Queen Melody and A Pop Medley incorporating Your Song amongst others. Many thanks to Mrs. Sutton, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Whitfield, Mrs. Lawson and Mr. Taylor for their support of the children and this extraordinary event in particular!
